Did you know that according to the 2011 Scottish Census 12,500 people use British Sign Language (BSL) at home?
Also, it is important to bear in mind that many deaf people do not actually use BSL at home because their English is good enough to communicate with their families who are not deaf, however, their level of English is insufficient for discussing complex information such as buying and selling a property.
Buying and selling your home can be a daunting process for everyone especially those that have barriers when it comes to communicating.
At McEwan Fraser Legal, we feel that it is important for people with any disability to have the opportunity to learn and ask questions about the services we provide. We hosted our first MFL event with the deaf community recently where we explained the process of buying, selling and conveyancing.
It was a great success with over 17 guests attending, some of whom had travelled a considerable distance to be with us. The guests were given the opportunity to ask questions with the help of an interpreter and ended with a tour around our office.
We are currently working with individuals and charities in the deaf community to find other ways to address the difficulties that exist when selling and buying a property. One of the first things we are looking to do is more presentations across Scotland to the deaf community.
