Completed in 1865 for David Greenhill Gardyne, Finavon Castle is the ancestral home of the Lindsay and Crawford clans. It is a beautiful sandstone mansion house built in the Scottish baronial style. It was first modernised in 1929 with the addition of electricity and modern drainage systems and then in 1984 was successfully converted in to eight high quality executive apartments. The Castle retains many original features including ornate cornicing, wood panelled doors, shelving and shutters, sash and case windows and cast iron fire-places.
Finavon Castle sits in 6 acres of communal grounds which are laid to lawns and also include extensive mature forest areas featuring species such as the Wellingtonia Sequoia. The Tower apartment has a private area of land situated within the walled garden. The main monbloc style driveway and immediate area of land to this is shared with the Earl of Crawford Suite (flat 2). Entrance to the Tower apartment is via the original imposing wood front door, into the main reception hallway of The Earl of Crawford Suite , which allows full access rights to the entrance stairway to The Tower apartment.
Walk through the entrance door in to the gallery landing which affords access to a range of versatile rooms. Glance upwards to the stunning bespoke stained glass cupola bringing light into the apartment. Located on the right is the drawing room, which is an impressive, large room with feature cast iron fireplace and sash and case windows looking out over a wrought iron enclosed Juliet style balcony. The ceilings are in excess of 10 feet high and give a lovely airy feel to the room. A further door leads to the utility room with new, high-efficiency LPG boiler serving domestic hot water and central heating.
The recently re-fitted kitchen has a lovely outlook to the south westerly side of the castle, where red squirrels can be watched playing along with numerous bird species including the resident pheasants. The modern units, sink and tap expertly match the American style fridge freezer and electric range cooker. There is ample space for a table and chairs.
In addition to the 2-piece cloakroom with large cupboard, separate large coat & shoe cupboard, the hall leads to the splendid, dual aspect library. This beautifully finished room boasts impressive south facing views towards Finavon Hill and over the Castle lawns. The dual tone marble fireplace houses a large multi-fuel stove which provides an excellent, cost effective, source of heat to the apartment.
As you climb to the second floor, an impressive stained glass cupola greets you flooding additional light into the landing. The three double bedrooms located on this floor all enjoy period features and outstanding views over the countryside. The family bathroom has been elegantly refitted and comprises of a 4-piece suite with deep bath, double shower, low level WC and stone wash hand bowl. There is a further door leading into a small walk in cupboard as well as additional cupboard space with shelving in the bathroom for toiletries.
Two of the double bedrooms have fitted double wardrobes while the master has a feature cast iron fireplace with LPG coal effect fire and dual aspect windows. There are two further cupboards one with shelving before you take the spiral staircase to the third floor. Upon reaching the third floor you have the fourth double bedroom/games room which enjoys dual aspect windows, feature open fireplace and walk in cupboard for additional storage. From this landing you rise to the fourth floor passing various period features to the roof terrace.
The roof terrace offers uninterrupted 360° views stretching for as far as the eye can see. This area has been decked out and has a stone seating area with space for garden furniture and flower boxes and tubs.
Outside you have parking to the front of the castle with driveway leading to the garage block where you have two garages for additional parking or storage. The LPG tank is located to the side, which is shared by all properties and topped up automatically when required.
The castle sits in 6 acres of communal grounds. These comprise of grassed lawns, historic forested areas, a newly planted fruit orchard and beautiful well established shrub areas. These include extensive rhododendrons, numerous flowering plants including carpets of snow drops, many daffodil species, bluebells and a lovely front ha-ha border. The castle is approached via a private drive from the Finavon Hill road. Each resident has a defined garden area within the peaceful setting of Finavon Castle Walled Garden. A number of residents also have well defined private gardens within the policies.
There is a vibrant Finavon Castle Residents’ Association which co-ordinates improvement works and manages the communal fund (£60 per month contribution) which pays for the grounds-men to keep the castle and grounds in pristine condition.
