National Apprenticeship Week 2016 – 14th– 18th March, puts the spotlight on the benefits of apprenticeships to both young people and employers.
Today, we got to catch up with one of our apprentices, Jess Duncan who joined McEwan Fraser Legal last year as an apprentice in our legal team.
MFL – What made you choose to do an apprenticeship?
Jess – I left school early and went to Limelight Careers who provided me ways to enhance my employment and career path. I chose to work for McEwan Fraser Legal as it fitted my requirements and I wanted to experience a fast paced business environment. Another good thing about this apprenticeship was that I will achieve a SVQ business administration qualification at the end of the programme.
MFL – How do you combine your training with your work?
Jess – It’s quite difficult to explain because the department is so busy that most of the training is done on the job. However, we are given different tasks so we are able to gain knowledge and skills, as well as experience different procedures and practices. Every month, a consultant from Limelight will come into the office to speak to us and discuss how we are getting on and it is a great time to reflect!
MFL – What’s the most important thing you’ve learned so far?
Jess – How the legal department is run on a day to day basis, especially as conveyancing is so fast paced, everything has to be organised and accurate, an eye for detail is also another thing! I learnt the importance of working as a team with tight deadlines. And finally, I feel much more confident working in a business environment.
MFL – What has been the most difficult thing you’ve encountered?
Jess – Dealing with stressed clients without panicking. For example, there have been cases when client’s property sales have fallen through, or there have been problems with the property. It is important to calm clients down and deal with them in the most efficient and sympathetic way, ideally without making them unhappy.
MFL – What do you enjoy most about your role?
Jess – There are so many aspects to my role that I enjoy! I don’t have a ‘typical day’ in the office but I would say there is never a dull moment. I enjoy coming to work because of the team I work with. It’s such a friendly environment, although busy and stressful, we all try to help each other out. And most importantly this role has really boosted my confidence as I can deal with property tasks myself now without the need to be reliant on team members.
MFL – What do you hope to achieve from this apprenticeship?
Jess – Of course the SVQ business administration qualification; knowledge of conveyancing, understanding legal terms; I would love to grow further within the company and hopefully continue with my training therefore allowing me to progress within my full time job.
At McEwan Fraser Legal, we are proud to be part of the Modern Apprenticeship scheme and have had phenomenal results working with individuals who needed that extra push to get into the workplace. Jess is just one of many success stories where young people joined us and secured a permanent role through an apprenticeship.
